Making technology history

GE has unveiled the world’s first 24-cylinder gas engine for commercial operation. With enough output to power 9,000 European households, the Jenbacher J624 GS represents a quantum leap in gas engine technology. Capping two years of development, this unique product adds another solution to our gas engine portfolio, uses several fuel sources to protect our environment and builds on our vast expertise. Our first field customer will be a greenhouse operator in the Netherlands, with serial production of the engine scheduled to start in 2009.

Announcing the world’s first two-stage turbocharged gas engine GE’s new Jenbacher J624. Responding to the growing global demand for high-efficiency, simple-cycle power generation, GE introduces the next generation turbocharged gas engine. Applying proven technology from the automotive industry, the new engine provides significantly higher output, increased efficiency, and is particularly well-suited for operation in hot environments and in combined heat and power (CHP) applications.

The new Jenbacher J624 2-stage Turbocharged gas engine offers you significant advantages, particularly in the area of multiple engine power plants for independent power generation and CHP solutions.

In today’s marketplace, improved efficiency is critical; due to both the competitive cost of electricity and the reduction of CO2 emissions in a carbon-constrained environment. The new J624 2-stage Turbocharged developed by ABB for GE’s gas engine achieves approximately 10 percent higher output, increasing from 4 megawatts (MW) to 4.4 MW, and offers an electrical efficiency of 46.5 percent, an increase of about 2 percent.
Benefits of a two-stage turbo

While all gas engine applications work well with our new fuel flexible turbocharged J624 engine, there are two areas where you’ll find it excels – large power generation projects, including multiple engines, and CHP or cogeneration solutions making the new J624 even more economically practical than gas engines with single-stage turbocharging. The J624 2-stage Turbocharged is a real-game changer, especially for applications in locations with hot and humid conditions.
